Colorful heirloom tomatoes from Natural Environments

Tomato season has arrived, and summer colors and flavors are in high gear with local produce and Michigan fruit in abundance at this week’s Ravinia Farmers Market. Stop by Jens Jensen Park on Wednesday, August 30 from 8am-1pm (7am early bid shopping) for a great selection of farm-fresh heirloom tomatoes, peppers and sweet corn, as well as other summery selections of locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables to help celebrate the evening’s Blue Supermoon (also called the Corn Moon).

Market vendors continue to feature Michigan summer fruits, including pie-ready juicy peaches and nectarines, sweet grapes, plums, giant blackberries, and additional fruit selections as harvest is available. Crunchy late summer apples and crisp pears are also making an appearance this last week of August.

Shopping the Market is a great way to plan your weekly menu with what’s locally in season in the Midwest, including zucchini and summer squashes, cucumbers and final pickings of green beans, organic kale and chard selections, salad greens, cabbage and kohlrabi, fennel, early carrots. cauliflower and broccoli,  beets, salad turnips, parsley, flavorful basil, dill, and other herbs, fruits and veggies.

Join more than 20 weekly local produce, food, artisanal product, plant and natural product vendors in the beautiful setting at Jens Jensen Park. In addition to local and organic produce, select from farm fresh eggs, cheeses, meats, local honey, pastries and baked goods, condiments, specialty herbs and teas, beverages, artisan food products, skin care essentials and soaps, tailored women’s clothing, and fresh cut flowers and beautiful plants for your home and garden. Vendors also offer freshly made breakfast and lunch items to eat at the Market or take home.

Be sure to stop by the Welcome Tent and enter the Ravinia Festival Free Drawing Experience for a chance to win two tickets to upcoming concerts, courtesy of Ravinia Festival. This week’s first prize winners will receive two pavilion passes to the September 3 performance of Shakti: 50th Anniversary Tour with special guest Béla Fleck. Additional prizes may include gift cards from local Highland Park business and natural products goody bags.
